What kind of pictures make the best stencils?

A photograph with good contrast will always make the best stencil. One side of the face should be nicely shadowed, otherwise, the stencil will become too washed out, making for a fewer distinguishable lines and a much tougher stencil to carve.

Choose a photo where the eyes that are easy to see.

A photo where the subject’s mouth is open or better yet, showing teeth will break up the area of the face that could just become a big black mass. Connecting the mouth to the chin and nose is important to keeping the stencil together. But if the mouth is closed, it makes it harder to make out the lips.
